Numair is depicted as otherwise dating women his own age. I don't think he liked her because of any of the age gap reasons I find disturbing (innocence, naivety, youthful appearance, makes him feel important, etc). The basis of their relationship grew from mutual respect, admiration, and friendship. They're on pretty equal footing: both super powerful mages.I actually don't think he would have done anything about his feelings if she hadn't. Daine was the romantic aggressor, while Numair was conflicted about it and never behaved inappropriately or coercively to her.Similarly, in the past (and from some on-page anecdotes) women often married and had children as teens. Tortall is a medieval setting, and things happen in the books that are horrifying by today's standards: slavery, pages sent to hunt bandits and spidrens, various raping and pillaging, intense caste systems. This is for a couple of reasons, I think: I don't really feel any type of way about it, in terms of consent or the ick factor. I still like both characters, and actually like them more as a couple now. I'm now 30, and reread the series during quarantine for the first time as an adult. I remember reading the series for the first time as a ten year old and being totally blindsided and grossed out (at that point anyone over 20 was a Gross Dad to me basically lol).
